See What Winter Left Behind: A Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Every Ozarks winter leaves a mark on the outside of your home, even when the damage isn't obvious at first glance. Freeze-thaw cycles, ice, and winter winds are hard on wood, fasteners, and seals, and small issues from January have a way of hiding until spring makes them visible. Before you get busy with warm-weather projects, walk through this checklist to catch anything winter left behind.

1. Inspect Decks and Railings

Winter moisture and freezing temperatures can warp boards, loosen fasteners, and weaken railings that felt sturdy last fall. Walk the full deck, checking for soft or spongy boards, loose screws, and any wobble in the railings or stairs. It's much easier to fix a loose post or replace a few boards now than to deal with a full failure once the deck is back in daily use.

2. Check Your Fence for Winter Damage

Freeze-thaw cycles push and heave the ground, which can shift fence posts and footings even if the fence looked fine in December. Walk the fence line looking for leaning posts, gaps at the base, or panels that have pulled away from their frame. Small movement is a quick repair; left alone, it tends to get worse with the next round of storms.

3. Look Over Exterior Trim and Siding

Ice and cold are hard on exterior wood and trim, especially anywhere moisture had a chance to sit. Check fascia boards, soffits, trim around windows and doors, and siding for soft spots, peeling paint, or gaps that opened up over the winter. Catching rot or damage early means a patch or board replacement instead of a larger repair once warm, humid weather sets in and accelerates any existing damage.

4. Clean and Inspect Gutters and Downspouts

Winter debris, ice, and heavy snow put stress on gutters and their brackets. Clear out anything that accumulated over the colder months, and check for sagging sections, loose fasteners, or downspouts that have pulled away from the house. With spring rains on the way, this is the time to make sure water is actually draining away from your foundation rather than pooling against it.

5. Check Doors and Windows for Winter Wear

Cold weather can cause frames to shift slightly, weatherstripping to compress or crack, and caulking to shrink and pull away. Test that doors and windows open, close, and latch smoothly, and look closely at the seals around each one. Any gaps you find now are worth fixing before summer humidity and storm season put them to the test.

6. Re-Caulk Wherever Winter Left Gaps

Take a walk around the exterior of your home and look for cracked or missing caulk along siding seams, around window and door frames, and anywhere two different materials meet. Winter's freeze-thaw cycles are notorious for breaking down old caulk. Resealing these gaps now keeps moisture out before spring rains and helps regulate temperature once the weather warms up.

7. Watch for Signs of Water or Weather Damage

Look for water stains on ceilings or walls, damp spots in the basement or crawl space, or soft ground near the foundation, all of which can point to drainage or roofing issues that started, or worsened, over the winter. These issues are easiest and least expensive to address in early spring, before the wetter months ahead put more strain on the same trouble spots.
